Specialized Education Courses

On-line Re-certification Courses for Teachers

These Specialized Education Courses are computer-based, interactive courses designed for working professionals in the field of education including K-12 teachers, coaches, counselors, teacher aides, administrators and any school personnel that may work with children and adolescents.

Credit can be granted to licensed educators seeking certification credits. Please contact the Division of Continuing Education at 719-549-2316 for additional information regarding this process. Please note that these courses cannot be used for the External Degree Completion Program.

System Requirements
These computer-based software courses are designed to be run from the compact disc (CD) and saves user data on the hard drive of their Macintosh or Windows computer. You need to begin and complete your course on the same computer.

Macintosh Requirements:

  • Operating system 9.2, OS10.x
  • A color monitor, min. 15" capable of displaying 800x600 px
  • 256 MB of RAM, 5MB of hard disk space
  • A printer attached to your computer

Windows Requirements:

  • Windows 2000 or newer
  • v5 courses will not run on Windows 98 or ME; Please call and ask for courses that specifically run on Windows 98 or ME
  • A color monitor, min. 15" capable of displaying 800x600 px
  • 256 MB of RAM, at least 5 MB of available hard drive space
  • A printer attached to your computer

ED 500: Section 11: Attention Deficit Disorder: Information & Interventions for Effective Teaching

ADD is an interactive computer-based instruction course designed to help students achieve a better understanding of ADD and intervention strategies to facilitate positive student change.

ED 500: Section 12: Behavior is Language
3 semester-hour credits - Tuition $242
Behavior is Language(r) is an interactive computer-based instruction (CBI) course, designed to give you a new perspective on student behavior and effective tools for facilitating positive student change. Behavior is Language provides a developmental framework for understanding what students are trying to tell you through the "language" of their behavior. The course teaches behavioral techniques and intervention strategies that remediate disruptive behaviors, reduce power struggles while increasing classroom control and reduce your workloads and burnout. This program helps you, as well as students, find creative, effective solutions to behavioral problems.

ED 500: Section 14: Autism & Asperger’s Disorders: Information & Effective Intervention Strategies
2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193
Autism & Asperger’s Disorder, is an interactive computer-based instruction (CBI) course designed to help you achieve a better understanding of Autism & Asperger’s Disorder and intervention strategies to enhance communication and learning and to teach more conventional behaviors. This course provides information on the characteristics of the disorder, learning styles associate with the disorder , communication weaknesses, and various intervention strategies that have proven to be successful when working with students with this disorder.

ED 500: Section 17: Violence in Schools: Identification, Prevention & Intervention
2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193
This interactive computer-based instruction course is designed to give you a better understanding of school violence and increase your interventions strategies. Violence in the Schools provides a foundation for understanding violence and the motivational purpose behind aggression. This course teaches identification and intervention approaches to working with out of control behavior in order to minimize the occurrence of violence in schools and the community.

ED 500: Section 18: Learning Disabilities: Practical Information for Classroom Teachers
3 semester-hour credits - Tuition $242
This course provides an introduction to the field of learning disabilities for special teachers, general classroom teachers, integration teachers and related professionals, especially those working in the areas of language, psychology and counseling.

ED 500: Section 19: Drugs & Alcohol in Schools: Understanding Substance Use & Abuse
2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193
Drugs & Alcohol in Schools is an instructional, computer-based training course designed to give you a more comprehensive understanding of alcohol, drugs, and their influences in your classroom. This course provides a contextual framework for understanding what students might be experiencing through his or her own substance use, or the impact of substance use around them and will help you better understand a multitude of complex dynamics that contribute to this biological and social phenomenon.

ED 500: Section 21: Functional Analysis: Introduction to Completing Behavior Assessment
2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193
Function Analysis is an interactive, computer-based instruction course designed to help you achieve a better understanding of strategies to facilitate positive student behavior. The course includes an overview of the hierarchy of assessment procedures used to conduct Function Behavioral Assessments. This course is useful for educators who work with children with disabilities because their results often lead directly to proactive intervention.

ED 500: Section 22: Understanding Aggression: Coping with Aggressive Behavior in the Classroom
3 semester-hour credits - Tuition $242
This course helps school personnel become more aware of the causes of aggression, its manifestation in gangs, television, sports, and drugs and ways to evaluate aggression and intervene before it turns to violence in the schools.

ED 500: Section 23: Talented and Gifted: Working with High Achievers
2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193
This course provides information on assessing, referring, and educating talented and gifted children, addressing their unique academic and affective characteristics, as well as providing a historical overview and listing additional resources.

ED 500: Section 24: The Traumatized Child: The Effects of Stress, Trauma and Violence on Student Learning

2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193

This course teaches you to recognize the signs of stress, trauma or violence in students. It also discusses the specific factors that exist in families and communities where stress and violence are common. A major emphasis in this course is on helping the participant understand the special learning needs of the student who is experiencing stress, trauma or violence in his/her life and how to meet his/her needs in the regular classroom. Working with parents and community agencies is also emphasized.

ED 500: Section 25: Child Abuse: Working with Abused and Neglected Children

2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193

This course teaches you to recognize the signs of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect and emotional neglect in students. It also discusses the specific factors that exist in families who abuse or neglect their children. A major emphasis in this course is on helping the participant understand the special learning needs of the abused or neglected child, and how to meet those needs in the regular classroom. Working with parents and community agencies is also emphasized.

This course meets the child abuse and neglect educational requirement in most states. It is the responsibility of the student to verify the course content with your specific state professional licensing agency to ensure proper credit.

 

ED 500: Section 27: Advanced Classroom Management: Children as Change Agents

2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193

This course focuses on cognitive and cognitive-behavioral interventions (often lumped together under the rubric "social skills") with an emphasis on teaching students how to change and manage their own behavior.  Since previous knowledge and understanding of traditional behavioral (operant) concepts and strategies is required, it is strongly recommended that you take an introductory behavior management course to learn the basic terms and concepts of behavior management prior to taking this “advanced” course.

 

ED 500: Section 28: Educational Assessment: Assessing Student Learning in the Classroom

2 semester-hour credits - Tuition $193

This course is designed to further develop the conceptual and technical skills required by teachers to help them identify their educational goals, and implement meaningful instructional strategies for effective learning by students with special needs. The focus of this course will therefore be on assessment for instructional programming. The course will outline procedures for designing or selecting, administering and interpreting, a variety of informal assessment measures typically used in schools. The use of a range of informal assessment measures in the academic and social skills areas will form the core of the content to be covered.  The presentation of assessment information in an acceptable format to parents and teachers will also be addressed.
