Prevailing theoretical models of large organizations and suggested alternatives.

Book Images of Organization, 2nd Edition, Gareth Morgan, Sage Publications, 1986.

Book A Guide to Writing Sociology Papers, 5th ed., Judith Richlin-Klonsky and Ellen Strenski, eds., St. Martin's Press, New York, 1994.

The student's choice of one of the following texts:

Book Leadership and the New Science, 2nd Edition, Margaret J. Wheatley, Barrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc., San Francisco, CA, 1992.

Book When Giants Learn to Dance, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Simon and Schuster, New York, 1989.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • READINGS: There will be considerable reading in this course. The course will approximate a graduate level management course and students are expected to have adequately prepared themselves to intelligently discuss the material in written form.

  • QUIZZES: Students are to read a chapter and take the chapter quiz immediately after reading the chapter. The student should keep the quizzes in order and return them with the entire course packet upon completion of the course. These quizzes do not have to be proctored.

  • BOOK REVIEW: Students are required to read and prepare a 3-5 page written review of one book, of their choosing, on organization or organization management.

  • PAPER: Students are to prepare a 10-15 page paper that analyzes their own organization or organization that they choose to study.
