REQUIRED MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS
Book

Elite Deviance; David R. Simon:  Allyn and Bacon Publishing, 6th Edition 1999.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • PAPER: The student is required to take a topic that is in the news today (within the last 6 months) dealing with some sort of economic, environmental or political crime.  Discuss the dynamics of the crime, identify the victims and perpetrators and what is the status of the case?  Then take the side of the accused and using knowledge of how these actors operate, discuss why they are not wrong in their actions, who benefits from their actions and why the victims are really not victims.  Use theory whenever possible.  This assignment should be completed in APA format, typed and double-spaced if at all possible.  Please remember that grammar and spelling are part of the overall assessment.  The paper should be at least 5-7 pages in length, if not more.
  • ARTICLE REVIEWS: The student is required to locate 4 articles dealing with different aspects of corporate and governmental deviance.  The articles may come from sociological, criminal justice or other journals, or may come from news articles.  If the articles come from sources other than scholarly journals, they must be from acceptable sources. All work must be in APA format and typed and double-spaced unless you have no access to a computer.  Articles should include a discussion of what the article was about, and then an application to the text, including theory.  Grammar and spelling will be part of the overall assessment.  Reviews should be at least 3-4 pages in length.  You are encouraged to send in the reviews as you complete them.
  • EXAMINATION: You will be required to take one essay exam in completion of this course. The exam will cover the entire text.  (Please note that there are less than 400 pages to the text, and therefore, reading and absorption of materials prior to the final should not be a problem.)   Essays should consist of a thesis statement, informing the instructor of what your essay will entail, the body of the essay discussing application of the question to the material and a final paragraph summing up the important parts of the essay.  Inclusion of references to and examples from your texts is important. This test is proctored.
