DESCRIPTION
An in-depth look at the images of social life and social relationships contained in popular movies.

REQUIRED MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS
Book Belton, John. American Cinema/American Culture, McGraw Hill, 2nd Edition ISBN 0-07-288627-7

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Prior to viewing any films the student should read the required text.

  • Students must view 8 films. These films can be any of the movies listed at the end of each chapter in the text. The student should keep notes on the film while viewing the film. This will aid the student in the remainder of this assignment.

  • Students are to keep a notebook listing the 8 movies that they have viewed, the chapter and page from the text that the title was found in. Students are to view the movies for specific types of sociological content and include in their notebooks a description of this content. After completion of the film the student is to type, double-space with one to one and one half inch margins a discussion of the areas that were identified by the student and the text as being important to the film.

  • The student is to rent or go to the local movie theater and view a new release movie of the student's choice. A short abstract of the movie should be given as well as an evaluation of the film using the above-mentioned criteria. Include this film in the notebook. This is to be typed, double spaced using inch to inch and one half margins. This review should be between 2 and 3 pages in length.

  • NOTE: This instructor uses the term "notebook" only to indicate that the typed pages are to be kept together and not turned in separately.
