DESCRIPTION
The history and role of corrections; correctional practice, relationship to law, prison society, working in prisons, special needs of prisoners, capital punishment, administration, privatization.

REQUIRED MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS
Book Michael Welch, Corrections: A Critical Approach. Second Edition, McGraw Hill, 2004.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Students must complete four course assignments and an open-book exam. Assignments cover specific chapters in the text. The final take-home exam covers the entire course.  For each assignment, students must submit a total of three written answers.  Students are to submit no more than one answer for a single chapter. Each submitted answer should be approximately 500 words. Answers must be typed and double spaced.  All written work will be evaluated in light of its grammar and style.  Evaluation standards applicable to university level work will be applied.
