Juvenile Justice, An Introduction;  John T. Whitehead, Steven Lab:  Anderson Publishing,  5th Edition, 2006.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • You will be required to take two exams in completion of this course.  The exams will be short essays and multiple choice: one midterm and one final exam.  The midterm will be through Chapter 6.  The final will then be over the remaining chapters.  The final exam is not cumulative, but if you would like to use the earlier information in your discussions, you are welcome to do so.
  • You will be required to complete 4 article reviews.  You are to locate journal articles dealing with different aspects of delinquency.  The articles may come from sociological, social psychological or criminological journals, or may come from news articles.  If the articles come from sources other than scholarly journals, they must be from acceptable sources such as the National Institute of Justice, Department of Justice or at least from an acceptable news reporting source such as Time, Newsweek, or local paper.  Internet sources may be used, but be careful, there are many unreliable sources out there that report information that is not valid.  All work must be in APA format and typed and double-spaced unless you have no access to a computer.  Articles should include a discussion of what the article was about, and then an application to the text.  Always use theory whenever possible.  An example would be an article dealing with Juvenile Boot Camps.  You would discuss the article and then using the text, apply the chapter that discusses boot camps as well as theory, (possibly social control or containment theory) in your review.  Grammar and spelling will be part of the overall assessment.  Reviews should be at least 3-4 pages in length.
