MATH 109 – Mathematical Explorations

DETAILS Semester-hour credits: 3 Tuition: $448.50 Methods: DESCRIPTION Emphasis on quantitative reasoning and problem solving. Topics chosen from logic, sets, algebra, linear programming, probability, statistics, number theory, geometry, and counting techniques. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory CSU-P Placement Exam Score and Math 099 and/or two years of high school mathematics including one year of algebra. REQUIRED MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS A Mathematical View of Our World by Parks, Musser, Trimpe, Maurer & Maurer; Thomson Brooks/Cole. (2007) Selected topics. Calculator: A scientific calculator is required. (Texas Instrument TI-30Xa works well). You can use the calculator on each assignment and all of the exams. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Homework: Seven assignments, each assignment will cover a single chapter. All homework set are from the Exercises at the end of each section. Exams: There will be three exams. You are allowed 60 minutes to finish each exam. Exams are closed book and require a proctor. Students are required to identify proctors for their exams using the form provided in the syllabus. Final: The final is a comprehensive exam covering material from each chapter covered in the course. It is a proctored, 2 hour 20 minute final.
