HIST 311 – US Foreign Policy

DESCRIPTION
History 311 (US Foreign Policy) will examine United States’ foreign affairs from the early beginnings during the American Revolution to the present day.  We will explore the events and personalities that have played a role in a developing United States’ foreign policy.  The United States has come a long way from a time when it barely was able to gain independence to its present position as the preeminent power in the world.  We will examine what brought the United States to this juncture and explore the challenges and options the nation faces today.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • There will be two proctored examinations during the semester. The final examination is not cumulative and will focus on the material covered in the second half of the course.  The exams will consist of short answers and essays.  Study guides for each of the exams appear at the end of this syllabus.

  •  In addition to the exams, you will be required to submit four (4) typewritten double-spaced assignments.  Length should be two to three pages.  The assignments will help you to synthesize the material in a given section.   The essay assignments stress analysis.  After a brief presentation of the facts, your essay should stress analysis.  What are the different ways of viewing the event and what is your position on the subject?  The writing assignments appear at the end of the syllabus.
