This course is designed for students pursuing a teaching credential in elementary or
secondary education. It is also suited for the experienced teacher undertaking a professional development
plan to enhance and/or re-certification for continued teaching. The text for this course has been carefully
selected in order to examine the link between theory, research, and application. Text content is presented
with seven philosophical ingredients essential for understanding child development. Research findings
highlighted in the text are selected by the author to strengthen child behavior examples revealed in real-life
situations. The student is placed in a reflective posture and encouraged to transfer the content learned to
teaching and learning settings in K-12 public schools. The content of the course has been chosen to reflect a
chronological approach to enable students to know children at a given age period in order to construct a
continuous vision of developmental change.
