REQUIRED MATERIALS & TEXTBOOKS
Book Guide to Observation, 5th edition, Reed., Mcgraw Hill, ISBN 0-07-298553-4

THE PERSPECTIVE TEACHER (book required)
  • Conduct three classroom observations with an intent to gather information from which to make a tentative decision about teaching as a career.

  • A guide to observation and participation is required in order to gain knowledge about the interactive process between teacher and student in the learning setting. Numerous formats are introduced to be able to conduct a critical analysis.

  • Become familiar with protocols for obtaining authorization to enter schools. Authorizations will include interviews with school administration, support staff and teacher practitioners.

  • Become familiar with the formal instructional process at elementary, middle, and high school levels. Charter schools or Alternative schools may serve to substitute for traditional school settings in the observation assignment.

  • A final report with appropriate anecdotal record will provide evidence of school site observations.

THE EXPERIENCED TEACHER (textbook not required)
  • The practitioner is provided an opportunity to structure a plan of action that will potentially produce enhanced teaching skills in one or more focused subject areas (e.g. classroom management).

  • The practitioner will be guided to produce evidence of reflective anecdotal record developed as a consequence of meetings between principal and the mentor teacher. Logs, teaching progress notes and mentor teaching critiques all satisfy the evidence requirement.

  • The practitioner will organize a final report that incorporates narrative descriptions of teaching progress.

  • The practitioner is guided toward professional development planning, concurrent with satisfying the course requirements. It is highly recommended that the registrant consult with the professor of record prior to developing a plan for enhancing teaching skills.

  • The final grade for this course is determined by the quality of the report. This includes providing evidences that support the final report. There is no requirement for numbers of pages required in the final report. Both preservice and inservice student registrants will stand on their own merit.
