This introductory course will provide you with the skills needed to properly interpret current trends in the economy. Specifically, this course will provide you wit h an understanding of; 1) federal tax and spending policies and the implications of debt reduction, 2) how inflation affects interest rates and the bond and stock markets, 3) the basics of international trade and exchange rates, 4) the basic differences between conservative (Republican) and liberal (Democrat) economic policies. Topics include price and profit decisions by firms, competition between firms, consumer demand, how markets address environmental issues, how wages are determined and the role of government when markets work well and when markets fail.
