CHEM 211 – Introduction to Organic Chemistry

DESCRIPTION
Study of aliphatic and aromatic compounds including current theories, nomenclature, properties, synthesis, reactions, mechanisms and spectroscopy. Emphasis will be on comprehension, understanding and applications of molecular behavior and relevance of the subject to everyday life applications. This course is for students requiring a survey of organic chemistry in one semester. It is not intended for Chemistry majors or pre-professional students requiring an in-depth introduction to the subject. Thirteen video tapes or broadcasts of one hour each with correlated assigned readings from the course text and study guide.

  • The course consists of thirteen video lessons of 60 minutes each on the general topics.

  • Examinations: There will be two 100-point examinations: a mid-term over the first 6 lessons and a final over the last 7 lessons. Exams are included in the back of this syllabus and are open book/open notes.

  • Paper: Each student is required to submit a research paper. Write a two (2) page, double-spaced, typed essay (font size = 10 or 12) on how organic chemistry affects your life.
