Social Science Degree Requirements

General Education (35 Semester Hours Credits)

Skills Component (9 Semester Hours)

English Composition I (ENG 101) (3 credits)
English Composition II (3 credits)
Mathematics (MATH 109) (3 credits)

Knowledge Component (26 semester credits)
  1. Humanities (9 credits)
    Select credits from humanities disciplines, such as art appreciation/history, literature, music appreciation, philosophy/ethics, theatre/film appreciation, or 2nd semester of a foreign language.  For example, ENG 130 Introduction to Literature, and ART 100 Visual Dynamics.

  2. History (3 Credits)
    Select from either World History or U.S. History. (for example, HIST 201 or 202)

  3. Social Sciences (6 credits)
    Select from any social science discipline. Credits are also counted in the Social Science Core below.

  4. Science (8 credits)
    Select two courses from any science discipline that include one science lab hour in each course (e.g. biology, chemistry, environmental conservation, personal health, earth science, geology, physics). For example: BIOL 121 Environmental Conservation, GEOL 101 Earth Science and their associated lab classes.

    Cultural Anthropology (3 credits)
    Microeconomics/Macroeconomics (3 credits)
    World/Cultural Geography (3 credits)
    History of the U.S. II (3 credits)
    World/Western Civilization History II (3 credits)
    Political Science, American/National Govt. (3 credits)
    Intro to Sociology (3 credits)


Specialty Core (15 upper-division, semester credits)
The Specialty Core may be completed by choosing elective courses at the 300/400 level from the fields of anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, and psychology.

Electives (49 semester credit hours)
Courses that are not used elsewhere in the degree program.

Note: A minor is no longer required, but an area of concentration is optional and may be constructed of related or similar courses that will group together to support the major. Consult with your advisor on this option.
