Select credits from disciplines, such as art appreciation/history, literature, music appreciation, philosophy/ethics, theatre/film appreciation, or 2nd semester of a foreign language. For example, ENG 130 Introduction to Literature, and ART 100 Visual Dynamics.
- History (3 Credits)
Select from either World History or U.S. History. (for example, HIST 201 or 202)
- Social Science (6 credits)
Select two
courses from any social science discipline such as
cultural anthropology, economics, geography,
history, political science, or psychology.
Note: Introduction to Sociology is required for the
major; consequently the social science class can not
be a sociology course.
- Science (8 credits)
Select two courses from
any science
discipline that include one science lab hour in each
course (e.g.
biology, chemistry, environmental conservation,
personal health, earth science, geology, physics).
For example: BIOL 121 Environmental Conservation,
GEOL 101 Earth Science and their associated lab
classes.
The Sociology Major has two emphasis areas within in it: general sociology and criminology.
A total of 36 credits are required in either emphasis area.
No grade below a C in any course is accepted for the major. All sociology majors in either emphasis area are required to complete the following three core courses.
Sociology Core (9 semester credits)
SOC 101 - Introduction to Sociology
SOC 301 - Sociological Methods
SOC 310 - Social and Cultural Theory
General Emphasis
Sociology majors with the general emphasis must complete the above core (9 credits) and at least 27 additional credits from general sociology electives. These 27 credits may include 6 credits from anthropology. At least 12 of the 36 credits must be upper division (300, 400 level).
Criminology Emphasis
The sociology/criminology major must complete the sociology core (9 credits) and the criminology core (12 credits), and at least 15 additional credits of sociology/criminology electives, 12 credits of which must be in criminology electives. The criminology core is listed below. At least 12 of the 36 credits must be upper division (300, 400 level).
