Classes at the Colorado State University-Pueblo Continuing Education English Language Institute (ELI) are designed to stimulate the interest of students. Students use English to learn about a variety of topics which introduce them to American culture and provide them with the opportunity to share their own cultural backgrounds. Communication and interaction are emphasized. Because of the small class size, students quickly become comfortable using both spoken and written English. Classmates learn from each other as well as the instruction.
Our Institute employs an interactive method of learning academic English in an environment committed to student success. A full-time student (12 credit hours) receives 20-25 hours per week of classroom instruction. Our instructors have at least a master’s degree in TESOL or a related field. To emphasize the importance of concentrated exposure to English, we adhere to a strict attendance policy under which students grades depend in part on the number of hours they attend class. Grades (A/B/C/F) appear on student transcripts. Students have access to all of the computer labs on campus and are frequently assigned projects which involve Internet research in English. We maintain a class size of no more than 10 students to provide each student with ample opportunity for interaction and individual attention. We are a new program, but we will apply for accreditation at the earliest opportunity.
Students at the English Language Institute can participate in all the activities that campus life at CSU-Pueblo offers. The event could be a historical and learning experience where the students actually see how life may have been at one time. It could be a global event that the students all have an interest in. Studying abroad is a cultural and eye-opening event that is only going to broaden the student’s life experiences. At the ELI we embrace these differences and grow from them to become a more productive and global society where we learn to appreciate all the wonders that life has to offer.
